FAQ's Sniff Snack & Snooze Dog Furtography
How do I book?
To start the booking process the best way to reach me is by email. Due to the nature of my business, I tend to keep odd hours so I'm rarely inside to take or make calls. All sessions are made by appointment only. To secure your booking, a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the session fee is due at the time of the consultation which is required to reserve your session date and time. The remaining balance is due in full at the time of your session. Unfortunately, the session fee is non-refundable, but if you need to reschedule, it can be used towards another session date. Session dates cannot be held without 50% deposit of the session fee. All prices are subject to change without notice. Once your session is booked, your price is guaranteed. A dog portrait session contract agreement will also need to be signed at the consultation which includes the term and conditions, policies of what a session with Sniff Snack & Snooze Dog Furtography is like and what to expect.
Can I book a weekday day, evening or weekend session?
Since I work full-time during the week, weekends is when I book sessions. I can only accept a limited number of sessions per month to ensure each client receives equal time and attention and that I have the time devoted to post-session work editing all images so that each client receives the best possible photos of their dog. All sessions take place in the early morning several hours after sunrise or late afternoon several hours before the sun sets as it's truly is the best and most flattering light of the day. But if mid-day is the only time that works for you than that's fine too. Please email via the contact page about availability to begin the booking process.
How far in advance do I need to book?
Since I only accept a limited number of sessions a month if you would like to book a session booking sooner than later would be ideal. However, when it comes to sessions for aging pets or pets in failing health and time is of essence I work hard at fitting them in no matter what. I do tend to book up in advance, so be sure you contact me as soon as you're ready to book.
What is discussed during the consultation?
I always schedule time to talk before each session that is booked. This is a chance for me to meet you and your pet and this also gives you a chance to get to know me, my work, style and learn more about how the sessions work. During this time I can answer any questions you may have, talk about ideas for the session and too make sure I'm the right photographer for you. If you don't feel that we are a good fit for each other, there is no obligation to book but if you would like to proceed I will book your session and 50% of the non-refundable deposit for your session is due at this time to reserve your date and time. This is also a great time to tell me everything there is to know about your pet and bring up any concerns about your dog's behaviour or what makes them unique. This way I can modify the session to meet your needs and offer ideas about where and when might be a good time and place to photograph.
What can I expect at my session?
Sessions are always fun, playful, natural and relaxed. I want your pet to be as they always are, doing what makes them happy. Before I start photographing, each session begins by taking some time for your pet you get acquainted with me. This way I can get a feel for your pet's personality and your pet can get comfortable with me. I start out by playing you're your pet, whether that means snuggling, rough-housing, a chase around the yard or play with their favorite toy. I will do a few test shots to see how your pet reacts to the camera so they can get used to the sounds that come from it. Sometimes this can last as few as 10 minutes, and sometimes it can last longer. After we have bonded a bit it's a matter of time for me finding the best way to really capture the personality of your dog.
It's important to me to take the time get to know your pet before I start taking any photos so they feel comfortable around me and the camera. The main thing is, I don't begin photographing your pet until they are ready for the camera. I don't force pets to pose but rather let them dictate the session. If you have a pet that would just rather to snuggle and hang out, then we'll take it easy I'll get images of them relaxing and lounging around and give them lots of belly rubs and cuddles. But if you have a dog that loves to play, we'll get images of your pet running, leaping and playing there way through the session. Not matter what your pet's energy level I will not stop photographing until I know I have a great selection of photos showing their personality.
I am a perfectionist when it comes to photography and I will do my absolute best to provide you with beautiful photos of your pet that will not only make your heart smile for years to come but also to have wonderful memories of your dog that you will always cherish.
Note:
Even though my sessions are natural, relaxed, and designed to have a fun and memorable experience with you and your dog and I will do my best to make sure that both you and your pet are comfortable at all times. I have the right to stop a session at any time if a pet is uncomfortable due to stress or illness. It is my belief that no pet should feel stress or pain just because we would like a better or another photo.
Where will the session take place? How far will you travel?
I am happy shooting anywhere. I'm an on-location, natural-light photographer, so we meet at a pre-arranged location. I can recommend locations that will work well with your dog's temperament, breed, size and coloring. Your session can take place at the location of your choice. It all depends on what style of photos of your pet you envisioned and where your pet is most comfortable. I capture my best images outdoors in uncrowded scenic areas with lots of natural light and room to move around. I want your pet to be as comfortable and natural as possible so their true self can shine. It is important to photograph them in locations they are used to, you're home, a local park, a favorite trail, etc. That way they will act the way they normally
do and we'll get images that remind you of the way you spend your time together. It also allows you dog to be comfortable and happy throughout the length of the session. What is most important is that your pet is ready to have a good time. Your home is great for a pet that maybe doesn't tolerate the weather outdoors so well. If you have a nice big backyard, we can do a variety of indoor and outdoor images. If the session takes place in your home, there has to be a suitable location and it must offer a good amount of window light. Mid-day is the best time of day for indoor sessions. I will need to have a quick tour to see what settings and lighting are available to me. If your session is in your home
you're welcome to do other things while I follow your pet around. Depending on the session booked, you have a choice from one to three locations. Session fee includes travel within a 30km radius of Wetaskiwin. Outside of the 30km radius, a travel fee of .50 cents per km will apply to the extra kilometers to cover travel time and mileage. Charges for travel outside my normal area will be added to your session price.
How long will the session take?
Sessions are anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on which session you choose. This is a bit dependent on your dog(s) and where we photograph. The time will vary as some dogs take more time and patience to relax and warm up to the camera while others have a short attention span and can take longer. Dogs that know the basic commands and not as nervous take less time. At the beginning of the session your dog gets to know me at their own pace. Only when they are comfortable the camera come out. I normally photograph throughout the session but always making sure there are breaks needed. But if I feel I still need more time to get a few more photos, I'll shoot as long as I need to until I have an excellent selection of photos for you to choose from.
What happens after the session?
After each session I go through and review and edit all images from your entire session. Images are colored corrected and brightness and contrast are fixed. Only the best photos are made available for you to proof and pick before being sent off for printing. Your images will be ready for viewing about three weeks after your session. I will email you a link to let you know I upload the images to your very own private on-line gallery where you can see and select your favorite images that you would like to purchase and have printed. I will also feature some sneak peak photos of your pet on the Sniff Snack & Snooze Dog Furtography Facebook page. After 7 days the on-line gallery is deactivated unless there is a special circumstance discussed ahead of time. There is a $20 charge to re-upload your gallery on-line for 3 days if you need more time.
Ordering
After you viewed your photos in your private on-line private gallery it's now time to order prints, products or USB of images. You've already narrowed down your favorite images from your gallery that you would like to have printed. Before any orders are placed you will make all selections and decisions at this time with regards to fine art books, canvases, wall prints, digital images, finishes and special effects that can be done to your photos. I will email you a print and or USB order form or give you these forms at the consultation. Once filled out mail back the order form with payment. From there I will do the final editing on your chosen images and I will ensure I get your final approval on the edited pictures you selected before ordering them. All orders must be paid in full before being ordered. After you have placed your order most orders are ready in about two to four weeks. Some products (canvases, albums, etc.) may take between 4 to 6 weeks. I will contact you and let you know when your order is ready. You can have the option of picking you order up at my house or if you live locally I can drop them off or even mail them at an extra cost.
Can you explain the whole process?
You contact me by email to book your session. At the pre-session consultation we will go through the details of the shoot what your expectations are and talk about your pet and finding out all that I can about them and what makes them special to you. I will ask you to sign a dog portrait contract agreement contract detailing terms and conditions. I will call you a few days before the session to confirm that everything is good to go. On the day of the session I will collect the remaining session balance at the beginning of the session. Then the fun begins. Each session begins by taking some time for your pet to get acquainted with me. This way I can get a feel for your pet's personality and they can get comfortable with me. I will do a few test shots to see how your pet reacts to the camera. I will play with your pet all the while taking amazing photos and making sure your pet is relaxed and having fun. A fun time romping around with your dog with lots of laughs. I will photograph until I feel I have a wide selection of images of your pet. About three weeks after your session you will be able to view your proof in a private on-line gallery. I will send you an email letting you know when your gallery is ready for viewing. You will have seven days following this email notification to make all decision on ordering. You can fill out a print or USB order form mail it back with payment and 2 to 4 weeks later you'll have your photos to enjoy.
What happens if it rains?
Rain and other weather situations is a normal part of outdoor on location photography. If it's scheduled to rain or the weather is not cooperating on the day of your session we can reschedule to the next available date. But if it's just cloudy out this makes for great lighting, as the light will be soft and not as harsh as if we were to shoot in bright mid-day sunlight.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my session?
In the event that you or your pet is not well before your session and need to reschedule please let me know by phone or email a minimum of 48 hours notice before your session. Failure to do so will result in the loss of your non-refundable deposit and a new 50% non-refundable deposit will be required to reschedule your new session. If more than 48 hours notice is given, your non-refundable deposit will be kept for up to 3 re-bookings, after that it is lost and you will be required to pay another non-refundable deposit of 50% of the session fee in order to hold your new session time. Rescheduled sessions must be rebooked within one year.
Getting your pet ready
There are a few things owners should consider that will help with having a successful photo session.Take your dog for a walk before the session. This will help reduce the energy levels and some nervous energy your dog may have. It can also makes them a little more relaxed when meeting me and cooperating for the session. I have no problem waiting or playing with your dog until they settle down. Owners are encouraged to do a bit of training working on the basic commands such as sit, stay, stand and lay down before their session. Many dogs know how to sit and stay but standing and staying is a command that is not normally taught but can offer some of the best images. Best images are be achieved when a dog that will be still for a few seconds at a time. Getting your dog groomed a day or two before the session is best. If your dog is not used to getting groomed a simple brushing at home and cleaning around the eyes can make all the difference. If your pet is brought to the session a little bit on the hungry side, all the better. Please bring treats as your dog will probably work better for their session. If your pet takes comfort in having a certain toy, or treat or anything you know of, please bring it to the shoot.
Can you photograph several pets at once?
Of course I can. I accept the challenge. I will usually photograph each pet individually, and then try to get some group photos depending on the situation. However, you know your pet best. If they don't get along at home than chances of them getting along on location are slim. This causes stress on them and you will end up with photos of them not looking relaxed, natural and having fun.
Can you take pictures of my dog and I/family together?
Sure but my purpose is to focus and get the best pictures of your pet but if I see an amazing opportunity to catch you both in a loving moment then I'm all hands on deck. Only bring the necessary people to your session unless family members will be in the photos with your pet. It's easier and less confusing for your dog to know where to look as it can be hard to get the focus that I need. Two people are good one person to be the handler and the other to act as my helper to get your dog's attention. But if you don't have someone to come with you we can make it work with just the two of us. Just means a little more patience and time depending on how many pets are in the session and locations.
I'm concerned about my dog being off leash
The dogs that I photograph are on a leash during their whole session. It's a MUST for safety. I edit out the leash in post processing because your pet's safety and comfort is always my main concern. Some people think an off leash park is the best place but it's actually the worst place as there are so many distractions it's very hard to get any great images and usually they aren't very pretty.
What if my dog won't behave or not well trained, energetic, shy, scared etc.?
I understand that some people may feel this way but really your pet is more cooperative than you think.Although owners are encouraged to teach their dog the basic commands, as it's much easier to work with, your pet may or may not respond to any or some commands at all. Don't worry. After all these are candid photos not formal photos and I'll take what your dog gives me. But the number one key to all sessions is having patience. It's easy for your dog to get excited with all the attention they will be getting and dogs will feed off the energy of people around them. I want to capture your pet just as they are so the goal is not to be perfect. By letting your pet be themselves relaxing and doing whatever makes them happy can often bring out their personality better than anything else. For energetic dogs they just have more personality. Which means more fun, laughs and images to capture and choose from. Dogs that rarely slow down often take the best photographs.
Shy or timid dogs can take a bit longer than normal. It may take them a while to come out of their shell but with a little patience and a little more time we'll get there. I provide the amount of time and patience needed to deal with any situation. It just takes a second to get a great shot. Every session is different and very few of them are easy the photos you see in the gallery are the final images of alot of hard work.
Molly Session
Whether you've spend a short time or a life time with your pet, unfortunately we know all too well that the worst part about being a pet owner is knowing that you will have to say "good-bye". The golden years of your pet's life should be treasured and celebrated. Every dog deserves to be remembered and end of life with our dogs is very heartbreaking. These special reduced rates were created for the elderly or terminally ill pet where time is of the essence before preparing for their journey to the Rainbow Bridge. I've been there, having personally loose three dogs to a devastating diagnosis and every day I wish I had more pictures of them and I miss them every day. These beautiful yet heartbreaking sessions highlight your relationship together and the love you share before they pass. We know how important these last memories of our pets are and how quickly our world can change. It is an opportunity to spend some quality time with your pet, celebrate the life you have shared and create images you will treasure forever. Because of my own loss I will always and will continue to give these sessions top priority, over all others fitting them in no matter what. I will take whatever time is needed to capture images that honor your dog's life in all of their well-loved glory and their bond with you. These session are either a half day or whole day. Please contact me if time is of essence.
Can I purchase the high resoultion digital images from my session?
Yes high res digital images are available for purchase and I am happy to offer this option since most people like to purchase the digital images from their session to enjoy having the photos for their computers and picture frames. You can have the option of buying a USB of all high res images ready for printing from your session or a USB with either 5-20 images depending on the session you choose. This USB containing all high-res digital negatives from your session will be the proofs that are seen in your on-line gallery. Digital negatives come fully retouched, without photographer's watermark on them and with personal reprinting rights. This will allow you to print as many images either big or small at any photo store of your choice to share with friends and family. However, be aware that the quality of prints is often not as good at mass-production outlets. Digital negatives are for personal use only and copyright will always remain solely with Sniff Snack & Snooze Dog Furtography. A USB of all low resolution photos from your gallery is included in the session fee. These photos will have photographer's watermark on them and are perfect for sharing via e-mail and social media. If the USB of high res imahes is not purchased and a larger print size is desired than it must be purchased through Sniff Snack & Snooze Dog Furtography. When you receive your disc of digital images, either high or low res, please remember to back them up or make copies and store them somewhere safe. They are precious memories. Then enjoy your images as they were meant to be enjoyed as beautiful prints and wall art displayed in your home. If for some reason you need a copy of your USB of high res images you can purchase it for additional cost.
Please Note:
If you decide not to buy the USB of images and buy prints instead, your images are kept on file in case you decide to order more prints or other products at a future date. Photographer archives all images from each photo session and stores them on an external hard drive for one year after the session date after that they are deleted.
